Colorado Mandates Labels on Gas Stoves

Last week, Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed HB-1161 into law. This new law requires gas-fueled stoves to be affixed with a warning label that states the following phrase: “This appliance should be ventilated to the exterior when in use.” In addition, the label will include a QR code accessible via mobile devices that bring consumers to a state website that contains “credible, evidence-based information on the health impacts of gas-fueled stoves.” In Colorado, 32% of homes have a gas cooking appliance, either a stove or oven. And surveys continue to show that residential consumers and commercial chefs love gas-powered cooking equipment.

Colorado Propane Gas Association Executive Director, Tom Clark, has been fighting HB-1161 since it was introduced in the statehouse back in February. “The Colorado Propane Gas Association is deeply disappointed in the passage of HB25-1161,” said Clark. “While we respect the legislative process, we believe this law unfairly targets clean, low-emission energy options like propane, which play a vital role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions across Colorado. However, Governor Polis has assured stakeholders that the QR code developed by the Department of Public Health and Environment will display scientifically accurate, up-to-date information. We intend to hold him to that promise and will remain vigilant in ensuring the public receives factual, unbiased information about propane’s environmental benefits and critical role in energy equity.”

As of the 2023 sales report, Colorado was the 17th largest state market in the country, with 189 million gallons sold. For more information, contact NPGA’s Senior Director of State Affairs, Jacob Peterson
