Community Resilience

Propane supports community resilience in the face of natural disasters.

As an energy first responder, the propane industry is committed to lessening the burden on those impacted by devastating disasters and to supporting long-term recovery efforts in affected communities. NPGA, along with state and regional propane gas associations in impacted areas, provides leadership and coordinates industry response efforts.  

A natural disaster happens every 18 days. Hurricane Helene in 2024, wildfires in Hawaii, floods in Texas, and a seemingly relentless stream of other natural disasters wreak devastating damage to communities. But hurricanes, floods, and storms are soon out of the headline news while communities and families struggle to recover. Propane’s reliability and portability make these support efforts possible:

• Safety is paramount. NPGA member companies secure tanks across impacted regions to ensure the safety of affected homes and businesses.
• Daily living during recovery is supported. Propane generators supply electricity to homeowners and tanks provide fuel for grills for cooking.
• Community needs are met. Propane provides fuel for essential needs such as powering hospitals and cell towers, and cleanup efforts. Propane marketers collaborate with emergency services and provide tanks for shower facilities and mobile kitchens such as Operation BBQ Relief.

Propane industry workers are often responding to disasters in their own communities while also being affected by that same devastation. In 2025, NPGA created NPGAid, the propane industry disaster relief fund to support NPGA member company employees who are in need of immediate financial assistance following an unforeseen disaster or personal hardship.
