In the last two years, 15 states have enacted laws to protect consumer energy choice, and more are expected before the end of this year’s legislative sessions.
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed HB 446 into law on May 3 with support from the Alabama Propane Gas Association, which worked to obtain amendments specifically to protect propane from municipal gas prohibitions. In Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp signed HB 150 into law on May 6, marking the end of a two-year effort by the Georgia Propane Gas Association and a coalition of energy choice supporters.
Alabama and Georgia join Arizona, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Tennessee, which passed laws in 2020, and Arkansas, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming, which passed laws earlier this year. Similar bills are have been introduced in state legislatures in Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
