Bottom Line: NPGA engages with state energy assistance directors so they better understand the important role that LIHEAP plays to many of the propane industry’s residential customers.
This week, NPGA participated in a panel discussion during the winter meeting of the National Energy Assistance Directors Association (NEADA), which is the national association representing state LIHEAP directors. During the panel, NPGA provided an overview of the residential propane program sector and discussed how the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) serves as a vital lifeline for many propane customers. In addition, NPGA spoke on the need to reduce, wherever possible, regulatory hurdles that decrease the program’s efficiency and effectiveness. This includes recognizing the unique business model of delivered fuels (as opposed to natural gas and electricity), and ensuring LIHEAP customers who are interested in summer fills, which would help ensure tertiary storage levels are strong going into the beginning of the heating season, are not disincentivized from doing so.
Propane is the primary space heating fuel for 877,000 households that are located in federally-designated Persistent Poverty Counties across 36 states. Questions? Contact NPGA’s Jacob Peterson.
