The National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) has been closely tracking rail safety legislation following the February 2023 derailment in East Palestine, OH. Congress has released several proposals on this subject, including the Railway Safety Act of 2023, which the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation favorably reported to the full Senate on May 10, 2023.
While NPGA supports the effort of Congress to enact rail safety legislation, the association sent letters to several Senators highlighting concerns regarding the Railway Safety Act of 2023, as it was reported out of Committee. These letters urged Senators to negotiate and amend some of the regulatory language in the bill to protect propane consumers from unnecessary price increases.
NPGA continues to engage Congress to ensure rail safety legislation strikes an appropriate balance of protecting local communities and consumers.
An example of these letters can her found here.
