In September, nonfarm payrolls rose by 336,000, exceeding industry expectations. The U.S. has now added jobs for 33 consecutive months. The unemployment rate held at 3.8% in September, which is historically low. Of those who are unemployed, 33.4% have been unemployed for less than 5 weeks. Since 1948, the unemployment rate has averaged 5.7%.
Average nonfarm hourly wages in September 2023 were $33.88, an increase of 4.2% from September 2022. Within the Trade, Transportation, and Utilities subcategory, average hourly wages in September were $29.27, up 4.7% year-over-year.
