A propane school bus in Minnesota recently reached a noteworthy milestone: 250,000 miles of service to its community since its purchase in 2013. Owned by Crosby-Ironton Transportation and serving two school districts, the 2011 Micro Bird Type A bus has proved especially reliable transporting students on daily routes, to extracurricular activities, and on long-distance field trips through severe Minnesota winters.
Crosby-Ironton Transportation’s owner — and only technician — Josh Schiffler marvels that the bus still has the original transmission and has only required one fuel pump, one radiator, a headlight replacement, spark plugs and tank recoating in 10 years of service. With its high mileage, low maintenance, no cold start issues, and an overall cost savings of 67% over diesel, this Micro Bird Type A bus is truly the little engine that could!
