On December 1, 2023, the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) approved the application for permits for a new tunnel to house the new Line 5, subject to the company obtaining additional government approvals and permits and with conditions related to the tunnel’s safety and construction. Additionally, the MPSC determined that there is indeed a public need for Line 5, finding that without the pipeline’s operation, suppliers would need to use higher-risk and costlier alternative fuel supply sources and transportation for Michigan customers, including those who use propane for home heating. The final necessary approval will come from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who is anticipated to make a decision on the tunnel in 2026.
