The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) approved on March 1 a “Request for Information on Chronic Hazards Associated with Gas Ranges and Proposed Solutions.” The CPSC’s action indicates likely future agency action on gas ranges. CPSC seeks information on:
- The scope and scale of potential chronic chemical hazards, exposures, and risks associated with gas range use;
- Data sources and approaches CPSC should consider when completing an evaluation of chronic chemical hazards, exposures, and risks related to gas range use; and
- Proposed solutions related to any chronic chemical hazards, exposures, and risks associated with gas range use.
NPGA will respond to the Request for Information (RFI) with thorough and comprehensive analysis.
The CPSC’s action is mirrored by the Department of Energy’s Supplemental Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (SNOPR) on Consumer Conventional Cooking Products, which intends to have a significant impact on gas cooking tops. NPGA is coordinating a forceful response on the anticompetitive effects of the SNOPR with the American Gas Association, the American Public Gas Association, and the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. NPGA’s comments on the SNOPR are due to the Department of Justice on April 3.
