NPGA Public Comments: DOE Notification of Data Availability on Miscellaneous Gas Products

NPGA seeks to exclude portable propane products in public comment on DOE Notification of Data Availability on Miscellaneous Gas Products.  On Thursday, November 17, 2022, the Department of Energy (DOE) issues a Notification of Data Availability and Request for Comment (NODA) on Energy Conservation Standards for Miscellaneous Gas Products.  The NODA was related to a Request for Information issued on June 14, 2022.  Comments were due on December 19th, and NPGA, in coordination with the Hearth, Patio, and Barbecue Association, the American Gas Association, and the American Public Gas Association, submitted comments on the due date.

NPGA’s comments focused on DOE’s failure to extend the comment due date in accordance with applicable law, DOE’s failure to hold a public meeting on this issue, and stressing the need to exclude portable propane products from their analysis.  DOE is seeking to improve standards for indoor vented gas log sets, other indoor vented decorative hearth products, outdoor decorative hearth products, and outdoor patio heaters.  NPGA stressed that DOE’s analysis, which focused on standing pilot lights, would have limited or no applicability to propane products, as most propane products do not have standing pilot lights, as they would drain the tank.  NPGA commended DOE for excluding portable propane products in the NODA, and commented that DOE should continue to exclude portable propane products in their analysis.
