As highlighted in last week’s Bobtail, an industry coalition led by the National Propane Gas Association, the New York Propane Gas Association, and Mulhern Gas of Hudson, NY, entered into a settlement with the State of New York to suspend its pending gas ban, which was slated to go into effect January 1, 2026, until the conclusion of appellate litigation. In the meantime, homeowners and business proprietors may continue to install propane-powered equipment and appliances, safeguarding market access for propane companies.
The suspension of implementation of the All-Electric Buildings Act is a significant win for the propane industry, as the New York market is, as detailed below, vital for the health of the industry overall.
New York Propane Marketplace
- Third largest state propane market: 430 million gallons sold in 2024
- Largest state market for combined residential and commercial propane sales: 376 million gallons
- 370,000 households use propane for primary space heating (2nd only to California)
- 11% of New York households have a residential tank onsite and use it for at least residential application beyond outdoor grills (national average is 9%)
- New York is home to 606,618 residential LPG accounts (2nd only to California)
- New York is home to 47,822 commercial LPG accounts (4th in the country)
