In March, nonfarm payrolls added 228,000 jobs, performing better than the previous month and meeting industry expectations. The U.S. has now added jobs for 50 consecutive months. The unemployment rate changed little at 4.2%. For reference, the unemployment rate one year ago was 3.8%. Of those who are unemployed, 28.8% have been unemployed for less than 5 weeks. Since 1948, the unemployment rate has averaged 5.7%.
Average nonfarm hourly wages in March 2025 increased by .1% to $36.00. Over the past 12 months, average hourly earnings have increased 3.7%. Within the Trade, Transportation, and Utilities subcategory, average hourly wages in March were $30.66, up 2.7% year-over-year.
