In June, nonfarm payrolls rose by 209,000, slightly below industry expectations. The U.S. has now added jobs for 30 consecutive months. The unemployment rate declined from 3.7% in May to 3.6% in June, which is historically low. Of those who are unemployed, a majority have been unemployed for less than 5 weeks. Since 1948, the unemployment rate has averaged 5.7%.
Average nonfarm hourly wages in June 2023 were $33.58, an increase of 4.3% from June 2022. Within the Trade, Transportation, and Utilities subcategory, average hourly wages in June were $28.96, up 4.7% year-over-year.
