In July, nonfarm payrolls rose by 187,000, below industry expectations. The U.S. has now added jobs for 31 consecutive months. The unemployment rate declined from 3.6% in June to 3.5% in July, which is historically low. Of those who are unemployed, a majority have been unemployed for less than 5 weeks. Since 1948, the unemployment rate has averaged 5.7%.
Average nonfarm hourly wages in July 2023 were $33.74, an increase of 4.4% from July 2022. Within the Trade, Transportation, and Utilities subcategory, average hourly wages in July were $29.03, up 4.3% year-over-year.
