After a historic 22 days without a leader, the House of Representatives selected the 56th Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson (R-LA04). Speaker Johnson has served in Congress since 2017 and was previously in House Leadership as Vice-Chair of the Republican Conference for nearly three years. Additionally, given Johnson’s close relationship with Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA01), the transition to the new Speaker is expected to be relatively smooth. With the selection of a new Speaker, NPGA believes the House will quickly continue consideration of federal appropriations, given the government is poised to shut down in just over twenty days. NPGA staff will aim to continue its relationship with Representative Johnson in his new role as Speaker of the House.
