A heating degree day (HDD) is a measure of how cold a location is. It’s derived by comparing the average outdoor temperature to a baseline of 65 degrees. More extreme cold temperatures result in a higher number of HDDs, which typically translate to an increased demand for space heating by energy consumers.
The below chart states the number of HDDs that have occurred in the month of February during the past 3 years, as well as the month’s 10-year average (2021-2012), broken down by Census Division.
Census Division | Feb 2021 | Feb 2020 | Feb 2019 | Feb 10-Year Average |
New England | 1051 | 924 | 1030 | 1020.6 |
Middle Atlantic | 1015 | 842 | 942 | 952 |
