On November 5, 2024, Washingtonians went to the polls and voted in favor of Ballot Initiative 2066, which prevents state agencies and local governments from banning or restricting access to propane gas and natural gas. These protections are vital in a state where governments, at all levels, have sought to limit consumer and business access to their preferred energy sources, including propane.
Despite the fact that I-2066 passed with a clear majority of votes – 52 percent – the result was immediately challenged in court by a coalition of local governments and environmental groups who argued that I-2066 was overly broad and violated the state constitution’s single-subject requirement for ballot initiatives. Last week, the Washington Supreme Court agreed and held that Initiative 2066 was “unconstitutional in its entirety.”
NPGA and the Pacific Propane Gas Association (PPGA) strongly supported the passage I-2066 and the freedom of energy consumers in the Evergreen State to choose whatever fuel source best meets their unique heating and energy needs. Matt Solak, Executive Director of PPGA, worked to ensure the views of his members were heard throughout the process. “While we are disappointed in the ruling and rejection of the clearly expressed will of Washington voters, the fact remains that Washingtonians want energy choice,” said Solak. “The PPGA will continue to advocate for consumer choice and policies that support affordability, reliability and energy security.”
According to the 2024 sales report, Washington is the 20th largest state propane market in the country, with 180 million gallons sold. For more information, contact NPGA’s Senior Director of State Advocacy & Affairs, Jacob Peterson.
