(WASHINGTON, DC) –  The National Propane Gas Association announced that Roland P. Penta of Geneva, New York, was elected as the new association Treasurer at NPGA’s summer Board of Directors meeting held June 11, 2007 in Washington, D.C.

“Roland has proven his leadership abilities at NPGA,” said Keith McMahan, NPGA’s new chairman.  “He has served as chairman of two of NPGA’s most influential committees and was a natural to take on the responsibility of NPGA Treasurer.  NPGA’s leadership is fortunate to have him in this position and we expect good things from him in the year ahead.”

Penta has over 40 years of experience in the propane industry working in the marketing of propane gas and its equipment.  Penta has been involved in the national and state propane associations for many years.  He is a past president of the New York Propane Gas Association.  He has served on many NPGA committees, including his position as past chairman of both the association’s Governmental Affairs and PAC Steering Committees.  He was the current New York State Director until he was elected to the Treasurer’s post in June 2007.

Penta has been president of Phelps Sungas, Inc. since 1973.  Phelps Sungas is headquartered in Geneva, N.Y., and has two other retail locations in Canandaigua and Penn Yan, N.Y.  The company, founded in 1939 by Penta’s father, is a successful retail marketer of propane gas and propane appliances.  It serves both residential and commercial customers across the Finger Lakes region of New York State.

Penta has also been president of Finger Lakes Gas Equipment Corp. from 1989 to 1995, a wholesale distributor of propane equipment.  He was also president of American Propane, Inc. from 1994 to 1996, a retail company selling propane gas and propane appliances.

Penta has been active in organizations in the Geneva, N.Y. area.  He was a past president of the Phelps Rotary Club and a former chairman of the Phelps Chamber of Commerce.  He served for 10 years on the Ontario County Planning Board and had a 15-year stint on the Town of Phelps Planning Board.  Penta is married to Beverly Penta and is the father of two daughters and one son.

The National Propane Gas Association is the national trade association of the propane industry.  NPGA represents approximately 3,500 companies, including producers, wholesalers, transporters, and retailers of propane gas as well as the manufacturers and distributors of associated propane equipment and appliances.  50 million Americans choose propane as their energy source.  For more information about NPGA and the propane gas industry, visit NPGA on the Internet at
