PRESIDENT BUSH'S CALL FOR "ENERGY SECURITY"
"While America’s propane industry agrees with President Bush’s call for energy security, our country will continue to need a diverse mix of energy resources for the foreseeable future including both renewable and alternative fuels in order to achieve this goal,” said NPGA President Richard Roldan. “Propane is America’s leading alternative fuel. If we as a nation want to be serious about energy independence, policymakers must continue to include propane into their energy independence solutions.” Congress clearly understands this, having enacted in the 2005 energy bill tax credits for the development of alternative fuel infrastructure improvements, such as building more propane fuel stations and pumps. 6.9 million U.S. households depend on propane for their primary heating and cooking fuel. There are almost 200,000 propane-fueled vehicles on the nation’s roads, while 500,000 forklifts use propane to power their engines. The U.S. consumes 20 billion gallons of propane a year for home, agricultural, industrial, and commercial uses, according to the latest available statistics. Propane is an approved, alternative clean fuel listed in the 1990 Clean Air Act as well as the National Energy Policy Act of 1992. The National Propane Gas Association is the national trade association of the propane industry. NPGA represents approximately 3,500 companies, including producers, wholesalers, transporters, and retailers of propane gas as well as the manufacturers and distributors of associated propane equipment and appliances. 50 million Americans choose propane as an energy source for their homes or businesses.
